What milestones to capture
The first year moves impossibly fast. Day 1 in the hospital, first bath, first smile, first laugh, rolling over, sitting up, first solid food, first steps — each moment deserves its own page. Don't wait to be in the "right" place to take a photo. The messy high-chair face covered in pureed carrot is just as precious as the posed newborn shoot.
Monthly milestone pages
Dedicate one double-page spread to each month. On the left: the best portrait of your baby that month. On the right: three to four candid moments and a small text box noting their weight, new skills, and something funny or sweet they did. By month 12, you'll have a complete timeline of an entire human life unfolding.
Photo tips for new parents
You don't need a professional camera. Soft, natural window light is your best friend. Get down to their level — floor-level shots of a baby learning to crawl are magical. Take more than you think you need; you'll delete the blurry ones later. And take photos of the small details: tiny hands, chubby feet, the curl of an ear.
Layout ideas
Open with a birth announcement spread — hospital photo, weight, height, time of arrival. Close with a first birthday spread — cake smash, first steps, a comparison photo next to the newborn shot. In between, let the story breathe. Not every page needs to be full. A simple photo of a pair of tiny socks on a plain white background can be the most moving page in the book.
